Lifting straps put the bar’s weight on the wrist instead of the fingers, so a pull can continue after the grip has failed. Three shapes exist and they suit different lifts. A closed loop — a single continuous circle — is the simplest and the one Olympic lifters use, because it releases the bar instantly if a lift goes wrong overhead. A lasso strap has a loop at one end and a long tail wrapped round the bar; it holds far harder and takes a moment to release, which makes it right for rows and deadlifts and wrong for anything overhead. A figure-of-eight strap is a fixed double loop that cannot slip at all and cannot be released quickly either; it is the deadlift and shrug specialist. Knowing which is in the box is the whole purchase. The published figures are few: length and width in centimetres, which decide how many wraps fit round a 28 mm bar and how the load spreads across the wrist, and the material — cotton webbing, nylon, or leather. Cotton grips a knurled bar best and wears fastest; nylon lasts and is slipperier; leather is the figure-of-eight standard. Padding at the wrist is comfort rather than performance, and a thick pad makes the strap harder to wrap tightly.
