The best weight plates for 2026

A weight plate is a mass with a hole in it, and the hole is the specification. The bore diameter — Ø 25.4 mm, Ø 30 mm or Ø 50 mm — has to match the bar, and a mismatch is the one error on this shelf that cannot be worked around. German home-gym listings are dominated by Ø 30 mm; gym-standard bars take Ø 50 mm. Read it before the weight. The material then decides nearly everything else. Cast iron plates are dense, so they are thin for their weight and more of them fit on a sleeve; they rust where the paint chips and they mark a floor. Rubber-coated and bumper plates are thicker for the same mass, protect the floor, and are the only ones that can be dropped. Cement-filled plastic plates are the cheapest and by far the thickest, and they crack rather than chip. That thickness is worth measuring: a 20 kg cement plate can be three times the width of a 20 kg iron one, which decides how much weight the bar will ever hold. The published mass should come with a tolerance — a few per cent is normal on cast plates, and the makers who state it are the ones who checked. Grip holes or handles change how a plate is carried and used for holds, and they weaken nothing structurally on a cast plate. And the surface: a plate that is bare iron will mark a laminate floor the first time it is stood on edge. We compare bore, weight, thickness, outer diameter, material and coating.
