A wrist wrap supports the wrist joint under a press. It is not a lifting strap and does not help a grip — that confusion is the reason a great many are bought and never used, and German listings use one word for both. The specification is short. Length, in centimetres, decides how many turns go round the wrist: 30 to 45 cm is a light wrap that goes on fast, 50 to 60 cm is the general-purpose length, and 90 cm is a powerlifting wrap that takes a minute to apply and immobilises the joint. Width is usually 7.5 or 8 cm and changes how far up the forearm the support extends. Stiffness is the property that actually varies and the one nobody measures: it comes from the ratio of cotton to elastic in the weave, and a listing that says “50 per cent elastic” is telling you more than one that says “heavy duty”. A stiff wrap supports more and restricts more; a flexible wrap is what most people want for general training. The thumb loop exists only to hold the wrap while it is being wound and should be off the thumb before the lift — leaving it on is how thumbs get squeezed under a heavy press. The closure is velcro on effectively everything, and its width and quality decide whether the wrap stays shut through a set.
