The best barbell collars for 2026

A barbell collar stops plates sliding off the sleeve. It is the cheapest item on this site and the one whose failure has the most immediate consequences, which is a reasonable argument for reading the specification. The bore diameter is first and, as everywhere on this shelf, Ø 25.4, Ø 30 and Ø 50 mm do not interchange. The mechanism then decides everything about how the collar behaves. A spring clip is squeezed open and released; it is instant, it is what comes free with most bars, and it holds least. A spin-lock collar threads onto a matching sleeve and holds well on a thread it was made for. A lever or cam lock clamps with a quarter turn and is the standard on competition bars. A screw clamp tightens by hand and is the one that vibrates loose slowly during high-rep work. Almost nobody publishes a clamping force, and that absence is worth stating: the mechanism is the only evidence available. The weight per pair matters more than it first appears — competition collars weigh 2.5 kg each and are counted in the total on the bar, while spring clips weigh almost nothing and are not. A listing that does not give the weight is leaving out part of the load. The material — moulded nylon, aluminium, steel — decides whether the collar survives being dropped with the bar, which is how collars actually die.
