Three dimensions that give three heights
The best yoga blocks for 2026
A yoga block is a rectangular brick that brings the floor closer. Its specification is three numbers, and they are the point: a standard block of 23 × 15 × 7.5 cm gives three working heights depending on which face it stands on, and that is the whole design. Blocks sold at 22 × 11 × 6.5 cm and similar are smaller variants that give a lower set of three, which suits smaller hands and shorter reaches. The material decides the rest. EVA foam is light, cheap, warm, and compresses under body weight — which is fine for a hand and less fine for standing on. Cork is denser, grips a sweating hand better, weighs three to four times as much and does not compress; it is also the one that survives being dropped on a toe least comfortably. Bamboo or wood blocks are hollow, rigid, and the traditional article. Density, where a foam block’s is published, is the figure that predicts whether it holds shape after a year; most listings replace it with a weight, which serves the same purpose indirectly. The details that separate good blocks from bad are small and visible: the edge radius, because a sharp-cornered block is uncomfortable under a palm and a heavily rounded one loses its flat face; and the surface, since a glossy foam block slides on a mat. Blocks are bought in pairs for most poses, and listings sell singles and pairs interchangeably — which is worth checking against the price. We compare dimensions, material, mass, edge finish and load.
