A chest expander — a power twister — is a sprung bar bent between two hands. It is one of the oldest pieces of training equipment still sold, and its listings are among the least specific on this site. The headline figure is a resistance range in kilograms, often written as something like “10–200 kg”, and it needs unpacking, because it describes two completely different things depending on the design. On an adjustable twister, a collar changes the effective length of the spring and the range is what the collar covers. On a fixed bar, the range is the force through the bend, which rises as the bar bends further — so the low figure is the start of the movement and the high figure is full compression, and it is not a setting at all. A listing that gives a single wide range without saying which it is has not specified the product. What can be read is the construction: a coiled steel spring inside a sleeve, or a solid fibreglass or steel rod that flexes. Springs give a rising resistance and can pinch skin between coils, which is why the sleeve exists and why a bar without one is a poor choice. Rods give a smoother curve and eventually take a set. Bar length decides leverage and therefore difficulty at a given spring, and it is published in centimetres. Grips are foam or rubber and are the part that spins loose.
